Dom Gallagher

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Dom has a wealth of design and development experience in multiple industries ranging from rope access hardware to special-purpose machinery to aerospace. Over his 25+ years in engineering, he started out as a press operator and quickly developed into more complex roles, earning first an HNC (distinction) and then a BEng (first class), studying part-time alongside his day job. He has a highly innovative approach to design, earning multiple patents in previous roles.

More recently he has studied to become a specialist on the subject of gears and has written published articles and also presented as a speaker at the German VDI (Society of Engineers) annual conference on gears. He is a registered Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and a member of the IMechE, working towards Chartership (CEng). Dom is enthusiastic and likes nothing better than a complex mechanical challenge to solve.

What Dom says:

I settled into life at Olsen really quickly, partly due to previous experience in electromechanical actuation and partly due to the welcoming atmosphere of Olsen’s close-knit team. I’ve transformed the product range of other companies I’ve worked for, and am looking forward to doing the same at Olsen.

My systems experience includes elements such as electric motors, conventional and strain wave gears, screw drives, belt drives, pneumatics, hydraulics, custom-profiled material handling components and electronic sensor integration, to name but a few. I have worked with several life-critical systems including fall arrest, vehicle load restraint, machine guarding (including high-power laser emission) and flight control actuation.

I love taking diverse elements from the wide portfolio of my experience and applying that collected wisdom to new challenges. I have experience designing for CNC machining, laser and water jet cutting, pressed sheet metal, wire forming, welded fabrication, aluminium and plastic extrusion, injection moulding, additive manufacturing (SLA, SLS, DMLS) and EDM.

I have developed a specialism in parametric CAD modelling and have developed 3D models for custom gear profiles and bespoke material handling components using equation-driven curves I’ve derived myself from first principles. I love mathematics, as Galileo Galilei called it “the language with which God has written the universe”. I’m passionate about understanding engineering in terms of its fundamental underlying principles.

Outside of work I have been volunteering for the Scouts for over 15 years and am a qualified rock climbing instructor (RCI & CWDI). I enjoy climbing all over the UK and take great pleasure in developing young climbers in my instructor role. I have owned and ridden motorcycles for around 20 years and love exploring North Wales and beyond on my 1000cc Honda. I have a very patient wife, 2 grown-up children and 2 rescued greyhounds, all of whom I adore.
