Electric Actuation – A Game-Changer for Machine Builders

Picture the scene. Thousands upon thousands of critical component parts, powering machines for complex applications in the most demanding work environments. Each one having to perform its own function seamlessly to maximise the desired outputs across an entire system.

This operation must be as fast as possible, reliable, efficient, and effective. So, investment in the right electro-mechanical technology has never been more important. A decision that will directly impact machine performance, the environment and health & safety.

If you are one of many businesses utilising traditional fluid power hydraulic cylinders on your machines, then you will have likely become frustrated with the complexity and high costs associated with the installation and particularly the maintenance of this technology. So too, its underwhelming accuracy, poor repeatability and increased energy consumption due to oil friction inside the hoses. Not forgetting the continuously running pump wasting valuable energy (up to 5 times more) when the actuators are motionless.

Piers Olsen, Managing Director of Olsen Actuators, commented: “With the advent of automated factories and processes, there are now a greater number of technological solutions available to engineers in the product design process. This has brought about significant advancements in our industry that deliver extensive benefits to the end-user. The significant leaps forward made in electric actuator technology is a game-changer for most applications and industries.”

When considering the overall total investment and performance for an entire system, electric actuators outperform their hydraulic counterparts in almost all areas.

This highly efficient product is rightly associated with minimal maintenance and easy programmability but is also now capable of producing the high forces and speeds traditionally associated with fluid power in a wide variety of load conditions. Moreover, it is far more environmentally friendly and improves worker safety too. Concerns over leaks and risks of contaminants, a common experience with hydraulic cylinders, are instantly eradicated.

And with its higher energy efficiency and lower noise levels, the electric actuator has become the product of choice for machine builders seeking to maximise their investment.
