Olsen exhibited at the DPRTE (Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability) Exhibition and conference. More than 1100 people were in attendance, with meetings organised with MOD. We were interested to learn about the possibilities of flight simulation applications for the new Lockheed Martin Lightning II F-35, where £150million has been allocated to this category.
With 1 hour of airborne time costing over £40,000 and 1 hour in a simulator costing £1-2k, there is a strong case to spend more time in simulators, with real flight time to become qualified just 22 hours with pressure to reduce to just 15 hours. Of the 146 vessels operated by Defence Marine Services, only a few have Moonpool ROV systems or winch systems mostly sourced by the shipbuilders in Holland.
