For the first time as part of the International Festival of Business 2014 and Festival of Culture Exhibition 2014, the underwater defence technology Expo was hosted at the Arena complex in Liverpool city centre. There were a number of interesting new technologies and weird and wonderful hi-tech equipment on display.
Many companies' products are being promoted as fully electric, including electric cable and winch handling systems for sonar deployment/mine detection arrays, ROV & fast rib deployment, marine simulation equipment, training and services from Babcock and Kongsberg. All-electric remotely operated vehicles with electric variable speed drive thrusters, servo-controlled, rated to depths of 3000m.
Curtis Wright was promoting their defence cable handling systems for helicopter docking systems to the flight deck and catapult systems for launching & recovering jets on the aircraft carriers. Interestingly today, a third of Rolls Royce's business is now in the marine sector. Babcock's Jeff Owen was Chairman for the conference. BMT Defence Services, QuinetiQ, SAAB and Lockheed Martin were also exhibiting.
