Belt style linear actuators, sometimes referred to as belt drive linear actuators, are a simple mechanical system which enables rotary motion to be converted to linear motion by way of a timing belt which is connected between two circular pulleys. They are available as an open frame based construction or can be supplied housed in an aluminium casing in situations where protection from the elements is required. They are commonly used in industrial functions such as manufacturing, testing and packaging applications.
Linear actuators can be used to push or pull and always exert the same force. As such, they are ideally suited to a range of applications, including lifting, lowering and moving objects, either sliding them into position or adjusting or tilting them to suit a specific purpose or to perform a particular function. Because linear actuators can perform repetitive movements with incredible precision, they are often used in the field of robotics, where they can control the acceleration and force applied when carrying out specific tasks and activities.

The timing belt in belt style linear actuators can be constructed of various different materials, depending on the function they are required to perform and the environment in which they will be used. Light duty indoor applications may only require the use of a fibre-reinforced elastomer whilst more demanding tasks, in particular where repetitive movement of heavy loads are involved or in situations where adverse environmental conditions are a consideration, often require the use of a steel-reinforced polyurethane belt.
